Bajaj Avenger 220 Street approval hints comeback in India

Although the original Avenger also had a 180 cc version, the Bajaj Avenger has recently been offered in India in two displacements (160 and 220 cc) and two variants (Cruise and Street). Only the 160 Street and the 220 Cruise remain in the Avenger lineup from the previous year. The 220 Street was reintroduced in 2023 after initially ceasing operations in 2020, presumably due to low demand. Following this, the model appeared to vanish into the woodwork once more, and Bajaj’s website delisted the variant.

The 220 Street and 220 Cruise differed in both appearance and ergonomics; the latter had spoke wheels, more chrome accents, and taller handlebars and a fly screen for a long-distance cruiser look. The Street, on the other hand, had a small fly screen over the headlamp, lower-set handlebars, and little chrome to emphasize urban riding. For added distinction, the Street also had alloy wheels.

Although the other dimensions are nearly the same, the type approval document states that the 220 Street is roughly 72 mm smaller overall than the Cruise. Additionally, the document notes that the Street’s gross vehicle weight is 3 kg less than the Cruise’s. According to the document, the 220 cc engine produces 18.77 horsepower at a maximum speed of 8,400 rpm. Additionally, the engine complies with OBD-2B and E-20.

However, it’s unclear if the 220 Street will actually be reintroduced to the market or if the type-approval certification is merely meant to guarantee that the model could be released later if Bajaj determines there is sufficient market demand for it.
